Street Spotlight: History of Crenshaw Blvd09-08-2020
It’s hard to generalize the 23-mile expanse that is Crenshaw Boulevard; the iconic thoroughfare has undergone many transformations since its inception in the early 1900s. However, few can dispute that the Crenshaw Boulevard of today is a vibrant center of Black culture and commerce in LA.
One of our favorite sections of the Crenshaw area is the lively neighborhood of Leimert Park, known for its famed musical and artistic flair. In its heyday, venues such as Maverick’s Flat hosted some of the biggest acts of the 1970s, including the likes of Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina Turner, and The Temptations.
As a company, we find ourselves lucky to be intertwined with the Leimert Park neighborhood, working on projects that will serve the community and bring much-needed housing to the area. It’s most important that we listen to and learn from current neighborhood residents, as well as making sure our work reflects the artistic legacy of Leimert Park.
